Employer Settles Maternity Leave Bias Suit

For no good reason I can think of other than they enjoy pain, or paying the other party’s attorney’s fees, some employers out there continue to be clueless about the rights of pregnant employees to take maternity leave.

Latest case in point is a health care company in the Winston-Salem, North Carolina area. According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the company, Level Four  Orthotics & Prosthetics, Inc., unlawfully fired Lesley Lawson one month after her hire, because she had requested maternity leave.

All she wanted was 4 weeks of leave, and her supervisor had made plans to cover her work during her abence.

But after the supervisor informed the owner about Lawson’s request for leave, the company fired her, the EEOC charged.

The company agreed to settle the lawsuit for $48,000, the EEOC announced on Thursday.

A wise move, considering the likelihood of the company winning this was slim to none.
