Woman Fired For Not Disclosing Pregnancy Recovers $37K in Settlement of EEOC Lawsuit

Employers continue to trip up in their handling of pregnant employees. The bottom line is this: It’s illegal to fire a woman because she is pregnant or didn’t reveal her pregnancy during a job interview.

A pregnant employee fired by a Georgia-based medical practice will receive $37,000 in settlement of a Pregnancy Discrimination Act lawsuit, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced today.

EEOC filed its suit against CFS Health Management Inc., dba Shefa Wellness Center, a Canton, Ga.,  medical practice specializing in cosmetic skin care treatments, alleging that it fired a female skin care specialist just two days after she told the company’s owner of her pregnancy.

The agency alleged that when the female employee questioned why she was terminated, the employer told her that she had deceived the company by not disclosing her pregnancy during the interview.

“Firing a woman simply because she is pregnant is simply against the law,” said Robert K. Dawkins, regional attorney of EEOC’s Atlanta District.  “EEOC will stand up for the rights of women to enjoy their rights to livelihood and motherhood–and not have to choose between them.”

Here’s the EEOC’s announcement of the settlement.
