Justice Dept. Suit Charges Pattern or Practice Title VII Violation by Lubbock Police Department

Did the city of Lubbock, Texas, engage in a pattern or practice of discrimination keeping Hispanics and women  from being considered for entry-level police officer jobs?

The U.S. Department of Justice thinks so, as it announced today that it has filed a pattern or practice national origin and sex discrimination Title VII lawsuit against the city.

The suit filed in federal district court in Texas alleges that the Lubbock Police Department’s (LPD) written and physical fitness examinations had the effect of excluding Hispanic and female applicants from consideration for hire as entry-level police officers without a showing that these tests screened candidates for skills that are required for the job.

Here’s DOJ’s announcement of the lawsuit.
