Ex-Employee Alleges Jewish Nonprofit Group Fired Her Because She Wasn’t Observant Enough

Did a Jewish nonprofit organization fire its director of medical services because she wasn’t religiously observant enough?

That’s what Helaine Dominguez, fired in 2013 after 12 years with Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services is claiming in a wrongful termination lawsuit.

Dominguez alleges in her lawsuit filed in a Manhattan court that she fell out of favor with her new boss, Avrohom Adler, who sought to cultivate a more religiously observant staff.

“Immediately after his appointment, Adler began a crusade to ensure that staff in the departments reporting to him were comprised of Orthodox or highly observant Jews.”

According to the lawsuit, Dominguez had gone on leave to care for her son following his surgery. When she returned, Adler supposedly told her that the organization was “going in a new direction” and fired her.
