Company That Fired Pregnant Employee After She Obtained Doctor’s Note Settles EEOC Suit

It never ceases to amaze me that there are still employers out there who don’t get that it’s against the law to fire a female employee because she is pregnant.

A home health care company in Texas is the latest employer to feel the hot legal breath of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission over its firing of a pregnant employee.

The EEOC charged that Your Team Health, L.L.C. fired a female home health aide because she became pregnant. According to the commission, Zanna Clore-Rios was told to obtain a doctor’s note after the employer learned of her pregnancy. Despite providing confirmation from her doctor that she could return to work, the company decided to fire the aide just minutes after she furnished the required note.

This violated the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, part of Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the EEOC alleged.

The company made the wise move and agreed to settle the lawsuit for $20,000.
