Maryland Adds to Worker Protections

New protections for employees working in Maryland took effect on October 1.

Employers in Maryland are now forbidden to providing less favorable employment opportunities based on sex and gender identity. It is also now against the law for employers to forbid workers from discussing or disclosing wages.

There was also an important development in workers’ favor at the county level.

A new law in Montgomery County, Maryland, requires all county employers to provide earned sick and safe leave, including time off to care for a family member who has been a victim of sexual assault or domestic violence. The law applies to companies with five or more employees. Companies with fewer than five employees can offer unpaid leave.
